Commissioned for the 2003 opening of the new Noto Airport in Wajima, Japan, Alfred Reed brings us another significant work for the concert band repertoire. Since the year 2003 is also the centenary of the Wright brothers' first flights, this work commemorates "A Century of Flight" as well.
The Suite is composed in 3 movements:
I. Prologue: Look to the Skies!
The first movement describes a look in the sky, where nowadays not only birds are flying.
II. Intermezzo: The Winds and Waves of Wajima
The second movement is a tribute to this city on the North Central Coast of Japan, whose past and much of its present have been tied to fishing the waters of the Sea of Japan, and which will now become the gateway to a much wider world.
III. March: With the Wings of Eagles.
This brillian, optimistic March points the way to the future with both optimistim and confidence in its future.
