How could the everyday life of a family be put into music ? Kees Vlak gives us a very amusing and entertaining answer to this question with his suite A NICE FAMILY for trombone quartet. The composer describes the different characters of "his" four family members in four movements: the “Master of the house” him- or herself is represented by a march. He (or she?) is the head of the family, so (s)he leads the others and presents himself as an excellent host: always inconspicuously elegant, straightforward, but always ready to have a little fun. His or her partner, on the other hand, is "always busy" and - quite the opposite to his counterpart - a rather spirited type. As so often, the two siblings could not be more different: In the third movement, "Song without words", the composer portrays a child that is completely thoughtful and introverted. Its favourite hobbies are reading and painting, to which it can devote itself completely, not thinking about anything else. The “Jolly Jumper” sparkles with energy, is in constant motion and often turns everything upside down. You are very welcome in the home of our small, nice family!
