An der schönen blauen Donau (The Blue Danube Waltz) has had more success as a concert waltz than in the original choral version: since its victorious performance at the World Exhibition in Paris (1867) it has achieved fame world-wide. In Austria An der schönen blauen Donau has even become an unofficial anthem. At the traditional New Year’s concert given by the Vienna Philharmonic, this waltz—along with Radetzky March by Johann Strauss the Elder—is always played as an encore.
