Carmen is one of the most popular operas and a major work for Bizet (1838-1875). Many band arrangements entitled “Carmen Fantasy” can be found, using arias, preludes, and suites. I arranged the famous aria from Act 2, Couplets (Toreador Song) that Escamillo sings in the opera. The bold and fearless melody of Havanaise advances with striking rhythm. In between, other familiar melodies come and go. Enjoy playing and listening as both performers and director have the opportunity to experience Carmen from different perspectives.
If brass players have difficulty maintaining pitch when executing slurred phrases, it is acceptable to use a soft “du” tongue to reinforce accuracy. If you do not have oboe and bassoon soloists for H, clarinet plays from 1st to 3rd measures and flute plays 3rd to 5th measures.
