Banda (Orchestra di fiati)
Fanfare and Intrada for a Solemn Occasion
Info
This work was commissioned for the Tokyo Kosei Wind Orchestra on the occasion of the 50th anniversary celebration of the founding of Rissho Kosei-kai. It was first performed on March 5th 1988, by the aforesaid group, under the direction of Frederick Fennell at a special concert in the Great Sacred Hall, making this auspicious event.
The music is based on two contrasting goups of motives, the first a series of fanfare-like figures which at once sets the celebratory nature of the occasion, and the second a development of long, lyric line interspersed with a reminder of one of the fanfare motives heard earlier.
As these intertwine and together gradually lead the music back to the feeling of the massive opening motives, the music gathers all its strength for a final glorified version of the lyric theme, leading to a return of the opening fanfare at the very close of the work.
