The “Florentiner March” undoubtedly is Fucík’s best-known and probably also his most beautiful march. It is his Opus 214. We learn from his diary that the piece was completed on Dec 3, 1907 as “La Rosa di Toscana”. Why he had already changed the title to “Florentiner March” by Jan. 6 of the following year cannot be determined with certainty. Probably his publisher had to say a word about that too, and it is also imaginable that political viewpoints of the period had to be taken in to consideration as well. Be that as it may, the “Florentiner March” is an ideal model for Fucík’s especial art of the march. It became one of the most performed compositions all over the world both in its edition for symphonic orchestra, but above all in its band version.
