The town of Perg’s nearly 9000 inhabitants are located in the so-called lower Mühlviertel in Austria. The name goes back to the Lords of Perg and the town’s economic importance beginning in the 14th century due to several traditional guilds. Perg’s economic value also gained importance from tourism, which increased with the connection to the Danube Cycle Route in the 1990’s. In 1969, Perg was made a town and is an important transregional place for education. The town coat of arms shows a rearing silver unicorn, its meaning is still unknown today. Since 2016 you can find a unicorn made of 1.200 galvanized horseshoes on the town square. In 2017, the company Krückl Bau  commissioned “Perger Polka”. The piece is dedicated to the Perg community band and its director Thomas Asanger and premiered on May 19, 2018 at the “Concert in the Park”. The local family company Krückl is very successful in the building industry since 1954 and was awarded the coat of arms of Austria in 2004. Kurt Gäble associates the Perg region not only with his friend and colleague Thomas Asanger, but also with his great passion for cycling that has brought him there several times.
