Fantaisie de Noël
Französische Weihnachtsfantasie

Michel Carros combines three popular French melodies in this lovely fantasy that makes Christmas time sparkle in a musically tender way. The title “La Nuit des Cloches” means “Night of the bells”, hinting on the festivity of the Christmas message. A sacred introduction (Intro) depicts the winterish scenes of the French Provence. A large moon and countless stars light the peaceful mountain villages with their little churches. The “Night of the Bells” has begun and we hear them ringing from everywhere – near and far, large and small. The bells resound as accented half notes in fourth intervals. Over the ringing lays a fragment of the famous melody “Les Anges dans nos campagnes” (Gloria in Excelsis Deo). After the introduction the mellow Christmas song “Il est né, le petit enfant” (the small child is born) expresses the joy of the miracle of Christmas. During Christmas time people are particularly cordial; many rites are characterized by kindness and brotherly love. The next song “Entre boef et l’âne gris“ (Between ox and grey donkey) is a bit wistful. Is reminds us of the humble circumstances and simple stable in which baby Jesus was born. But the ox and donkey offered warmth, so the newborn wasn’t cold. The festive ending of this atmospheric Christmas fantasy “La Nuit des Cloches” is the song “La Messe de Minuit” (midnight mass). People come together and celebrate the holy night of Christmas. They sing about their love for little baby Jesus, accompanied by the joyful bell sound from the “Night of the Bells”.
