“Thoughts are free” (Die Gedanken sind frei) … a phrase that sounds so simple, but is also more profound than most any other. No surprise that this traditional German song is still famous and popular. Kurt Gaeble uses both the conceptual and musical themes of “Die Gedanken sind frei” in his beautiful new concert piece “Die Gedanken … Spiele” (a pun on the German word for “intellectual game”). The music reflects how versatile and complex human thoughts are – sometimes gentle and sweet, sometimes joyful and triumphant. Some passages are written in a rocking style, symbolizing the timeless importance of our thoughts, especially in this modern, unified world. The music also reminds us to have our own thoughts rather than simply accepting the thoughts of others. Sometimes we have to fight for our thoughts and follow them up with deeds. And sometimes thoughts become incredibly strong, when many individuals think the same way. To help us feel the power of shared thoughts it is Kurt Gaeble’s wish that musicians and audience together sing the song “Die Gedanken sind frei” before the band performs the actual composition.
