Toledo is located in central Spain, not far from the capital city Madrid. The history of this city goes back to the time before Christ, and accordingly there are numerous important buildings from a wide variety of eras. When the composer Stefan Schwalgin visited Toledo, he was so fascinated by the ever-present contrast between ancient history and modern urban life that he spontaneously decided to create a small musical monument to the city. His composition “Toledo” uses the harmonic-melodic language of traditional Spanish music and dresses it in the stylistic garb of modern popular music.
In this composition two groups come to fore as soloists: first the high woodwinds, starting with the flutes, the solo clarinet joining in and then increasing to the tutti movement. The percussion register then provides a brilliant rhythmic interlude that will captivate every audience. – Now it’s time to go to Toledo!
