Rondeau - Premier Couplet - Second Couplet
The TE DEUM is considered the most famous work by the French composer Marc Antoine Charpentier (1643-1704). The Prélude in particular achieved great fame as it is used as the Eurovision melody. Written especially for festive occasions, the music is structured into a rondeau that is played three times and is framed by two intermediate parts - the so-called "couplets".
This arrangement by Thiemo Kraas remains very close to the original, but by distributing the three themes among different instruments creates a very colourful version of this classic for brass quintet.
Musical notes:
For the purpose of offering the greatest possible flexibility, the horn part can also be played by a flugelhorn or tenor horn (euphonium), the trombone part by a baritone (euphonium). The bass part can as well be performed by only one trombone or supplemented by one. Optionally, the intermediate parts (couplets) can be played by only one trombone (tuba tacet).
The theme of the couplets is performed by the horn (upbeat to bar 10ff.) and by the trombone (upbeat to bar 26ff.) in order to achieve musical variety. In Trumpet 1, the respective themes are printed in cue notes. The lower part shows the octave position of the horn or trombone. The upper part can be played alternatively or additionally.
