Last Flight of the Dragonfly
Der letzte Flug der blauen Libelle
Info
The lavender is still sweet with fragrance and many insects are cavorting over the garden pond. Fall has already arrived, but the air is still agreeably warm. A silvery blue dragonfly attracts attention by its beauty. Its angular and unexpected flight movements testify to its love for live and activity. At times it is flying just above the pond, it almost touches the water surface and then it climbs abruptly. It appears as if the dragonfly would like to watch its reflection on the water. One could even think that it missed much during the summer. Kees Vlak describes this scene in terms of music and adds himself: “I watch everything that is occurring on the garden pond and I think of summer – for hours until darkness falls in and I go to bed. When I wake up in the morning and look on the pond, everything is deserted there. The dragonfly contortedly floats on the surface. It is dead. Winter is to arrive soon.” Kees Vlak frequently stays in Southern France. Very often friends come to visit him. The main theme of his autumnal impressions THE LAST FLIGHT OF THE DRAGONFLY takes up these relations. To fit its setting to music, he considered it most suitable to use the old Flemish folk song “Join the round, my friends”.
