Friedrich Spohr was a Saxon military musician. In 1864 he composed the world-famous march "Gruss an Kiel" (Greetings to Kiel) as a reminder of the invasion of Kiel by Saxon troops, in which he himself took part. From 1868 to 1893, Friedrich Spohr was head of the music corps of Infantry Regiment No. 102 “Prince Regent Luitpold of Bavaria”. In 1882 he was appointed music director. Due to its title, "Gruss an Kiel" (Greetings to Kiel) quickly became a popular naval march and has also become internationally known. In Switzerland the march is also known as the "Zofinger March" and is played there with tambour drums.
