Die Sinfonie Nr. 1 "The Lord of the Rings" (Der Herr der Ringe), nach Motiven von Tolkiens erfolgreichem Romanzyklus, war Johan de Meijs erste große Komposition für sinfonisches Blasorchester und bekam 1989 den anerkannten Sudler Composition Award in den USA. Die Sinfonie besteht aus fünf eigenständigen Sätzen, von denen jeder eine Person oder eine wesentliche Episode des Buches beschreibt.
