Some guardians of “serious wind music” wrinkle their noses and do not demonstrate any understanding if they are approached regarding entertaining or even humorous pieces. They evidently are not aware of the fact that light entertainment cannot be done in a more or less negligent way. It rather has to be well thought-out in order to have it unfold its attractiveness. The Munich composer Alfons Tiefenböck (1903-1957) truly mastered not only this especial genre, he also knew how to compose humorous music. As his “Merry and Jolly” was only published for trombone and piano as well as for trombone and salon orchestra, one may well assume that he evidently had no or only little contacts with band music. Jaroslav Ondra therefore adapted this piece for band showing the right feeling for such music. He consequently provides us with a composition that you will appreciate when featured in the second part of a stage concert.
