This German movie, based on a book by Lothar Buchheim, is a real classic. Its film score is very vivid, catchy and expressive and can easily stand for itself without the film scenes. Doldinger assosciates the main theme almost suggestively with the appearance of the submarine boat. The band version also beginns with the approaching and surfacing U-96, including special effexts like machine noise and sonar sounds by the synthesizer. The surfacing is followed by a fanfare and polyphonic calls for an attack. Timpanis sounding like on a galley, trumpet interjections soundling like gunfire and horn signals drive the submarine forward. Now we hear a flashback of the boat debouching with the main theme in a very soft version, leading over to a romantic memory written in a minor key. Contrary to the movie, the wind band arrangement has a happy end with an exuberant homecoming.
