Giacomo Puccini (1858-1924) is said to be the most important Italian opera composer in the generation after Verdi. In all Puccini wrote twelve operas, but died before he could complete the last one, „Turandot“. His compositions have remained in the regular repertory of the world’s foremost opera houses.
“Madama Butterfly” is set near Nagasaki at the beginning of the last century and explored the social and moral limits of intercultural relationships. It is a story of love betrayed, the innocent Japanese heroine of the title deserted by her faithless American husband and finally compelled to suicide.
Yo Goto's crafting reflects the opera’s journey from hope to despair, and relies only on a few musical highlights of the operatic plot.
