The Isel rises from the East Tyrolean glacier “Umbalkees”. It runs through East Tyrol and joins the Drau near Lienz. Picturesque sandbanks invite you to swim and sunbathe; rapid river passages make the river an Eldorado for water sports enthusiasts. The inhabitants of the Isel valley appreciate their river just as evidently as they are proud of it. Many hikes with his family on the nearby hiking trails inspired the composer Gerald Ranacher to compose the march that goes by the name “Isel”. Beautiful, majestic melodies bring the captivating natural spectacle of the Isel to life in our mind's eye.
