The main theme was written by W.A Mozart which explains the title VIENNA VARIATIONS. All variations are composed in a different meter. The “alla breve nature” of the main theme is based on a metric accentuation. It therefore determines the character of the variation which follows the main theme. Playing together in a 2/4 meter calls for particular attention in Variation 1. In order to evenly play the eighth notes, the high instruments must not hurry and the low ones must not stay behind. Variation 2 which appears to be of sad character is written in slow common time. The required great expressiveness of the middle parts is of crucial importance here. Regarding Variation 3 the charming character of a Ländler should be brought out. In no way should it end in a waltz. An eight-measure phrasing should be played, and the “suspension notes” should pretend to be a formal curtsey – in the spirit of Mozart. Variation 4, the last one, boasts an evident hunting character on account of the 6/8 time. The sound of the hunting-horns is portrayed in the chords.
