Mary's Boy Child (eXplora)
Info
„Mary’s Boy Child” tells the Christmas tale. Although it is a newer Christmas song, it is already quite traditional, mainly in the United States. Several famous singers and bands have performed and recorded “Mary’s Boy Child”.
“Mary’s Boy Child” is in calypso style, which developed in the 20th century in the West Indies, mainly Trinidad and Tobago. Similar to American spirituals, calypso was the chant of African slaves, who used it to communicate, to lament their fate and to give each other hope.
Kees Vlak’s eXplora version of “Mary’s Boy Child” is an easy and compactly orchestrated piece that is also playable by very young musicians. The second clarinet part is noteworthy with no change in register, so even beginners can join the group. The rhythmic structure is simple and yet radiates a typically lively calypso feeling. “Mary’s Boy Child” can also be performed with unison vocals by children’s or youth choir.
