Info

Even American band experts assumed for a long time that Edwin Eugene Bagley composed only one march, namely National Emblem that was written in 1902 and first performed in 1906. In the meantime, we know that his musical output encompasses more than 20 marches including America Victorious that also has become rather popular and appreciated by now.

Edwin Eugene Bagley was born in New England, in the state of Vermont. At the age of nine he began his musical career as a singer in a company of touring entertainers. His brother Ezra who later also attracted attention as a composer of marches belonged to this group too. When he was 14 years old, he began to play cornet. Later he was active as musician (trombonist) in several orchestras, e.g. the Bostonians, a traveling opera company. For some time, he had an engagement with the Boston Symphony Orchestra. At that time, he also performed on the euphonium, which he played alternatively with the trombone in those days.
After his marriage in 1893 he and his family moved to Keene, New Hampshire. There he conducted several regional bands, and among those the Keene City Band from 1915-1917.

Bagley passed away in Keene in 1922.

His most famous piece that goes back to 1902, namely the march National Emblem was premiered by the Keene City Band in 1906. In the course of time it became an indispensable asset for patriotic Independence Day festivities on account of the citation of The Star-Spangled Banner in the first strain while the U.S. military uses the trio section as ceremonial music for the entry of the ceremony's official party.

The American band expert and conductor Fredrik Fennell who at times stood out for rather unusual interpretations and at least unorthodox statements regarding European band history, however rightly assessed Bagley’s march “as perfect as a march can be.
