This piece demonstrates very well how the title of a composition can be transformed into music. Speak the words COSTA DEL SOL out loud very rhythmically and look at the introduction of the composition. The syllables fit the music exactly. And there is a story behind the course which the music takes. Both correspond to the composer’s explanation of how COSTA DEL SOL came to be written. While on holiday on “the balcony of Spain” (a free translation of “Costa del Sol”), he was sitting in a restaurant over paella (a Spanish rice dish) and red wine when he heard the words “Costa del Sol” spoken several times. This, as already mentioned, was the basis of the musical motif. After sunset it was possible to either stroll through the romantically lit alleyways or join the lively nightlife and dance. Both elements have been incorporated into the composition. There are very rhythmic passages and also cantabile sections. The two trumpets can occasionally stand out and demonstrate a characteristic vibrato. So COSTA DEL SOL offers you many ways to go on a holiday trip with your audience!
