Karl Komzák (1850-1905) is rightly considered to have been one of the supporting pillars of Viennese music very much like his colleague Carl Michael Ziehrer. His unfortunate death during an accident set an abrupt and tragic end to a promising career. Among the works of Karl Komzák II there are several compositions that are based on motifs of operettas by Sir Arthur Sullivan (1842-1900). On the one hand Sullivan satirically attacked the Empire in his music; on the other hand they are regarded as “hallmarks” of the Victorian epoch. The most popular of these marches by Karl Komzák II is the “Barataria March” that relies on tunes drawn from the operetta “The Gondoliers or the King of Barataria” by Sir Arthur Sullivan.
