Spirituals are songs that give people strength and solace. They often have a religious nature and relate to the belief in god or tell about hope for a better life. The origin of spirituals can be found in the USA in the 17th century. Many of these songs are known in various versions and with different lyrics.
For the edition of 3 SPIRITUALS, czech composer and arranger Zbysek Bittmar (1934-2004) chose the well-known songs “Joshua”, “Deep River” and “The Angel Rolled The Stone Away” and created inventive versions for brass quartet. The instrumental options for the four parts are very flexible and allow a wide variety of performances.
